Early Learning – Outdoor Classroom Day
“Since the 1980s there has been a 50% decrease in outdoor activities and a 35% decrease in play overall”
-Barreiro & Howards, 2017
Outdoor learning is crucial for a child’s development, immersing them in a sensory experience and providing a sense of freedom, joy, and a range of physical and mental health benefits. November 6th is ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’, an international celebration of the importance of outdoor play and learning. The benefits of green and blue spaces on mental health for all ages are well-documented. Green spaces in schools have even been shown to improve academic performance!
Consider celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day in your school and planning some outdoor activities – even ones you might normally do inside.
If you participate, consider sending your photos to your Education Officers – Early Learning to share. More information on the day and ways other schools are celebrating can be found HERE.
If you have any questions, please email our Education Officers – Early Learning
