Message from Director of Schools
Dear Colleagues,
As we approach the end of the term, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks for the many ways you have contributed to creating positive learning environments and supporting the learning and well-being of the students in your care.
Throughout the term, I’ve had the privilege of visiting many schools and have attended a range of celebrations and events. These experiences have deepened my appreciation for the dedication of staff across our wide-ranging and diverse settings, as well as the powerful role of school leadership in shaping a positive and faith-filled culture.
Our schools are truly communities of living faith- places of care, compassion, and high expectations, where respectful behaviour, positive attitudes, and active engagement are clearly evident.
You have worked tirelessly, given generously of yourselves, and made a meaningful difference. You are most deserving of rest, renewal, and time to recharge. Enjoy the holiday break when it arrives!
World Scholar’s Cup Global Round in Christchurch
Congratulations to students Xavier Crosby from St Francis Xavier in Hamilton and Eddie Dowdell from Holy Family in Merewether Beach for representing the region at the World Scholar’s Cup Global Round in Christchurch, New Zealand, from 20–23 September.
The World Scholar’s Cup is an international academic program that celebrates learning and teamwork in a fun and inclusive manner.
It combines debate, writing, problem-solving, and collaborative challenges across various subjects, bringing students from around the world together to compete in Christchurch.
Best of luck to both students as they take on this exciting global challenge!

Socktober 2025
On Thursday, 18 September, our Catholic Schools joined Catholic Mission to celebrate the launch of Socktober at St Joseph's Church, East Maitland, with a liturgy presided over by the Most Reverend Bishop Michael.
Socktober unites our communities to bring light and much-needed support to those less fortunate. Our Catholic Schools are coming together to raise vital funds to support efforts to eradicate famine in Zambia.

Annual School Visit
St Joseph’s Primary School, Gloucester, and St Joseph’s Primary School, Wingham.
I sincerely thank Amy Maslen and Mel Hunt, along with their staff, for their dedication to our students and the rural communities of Gloucester and Wingham.
Faith in Action: A School Community Living the Gospel
The annual school visit to St Joseph’s Gloucester this week showcased a vibrant and faith-filled Catholic community deeply committed to nurturing the whole child—spiritually, academically, and personally. At the core of the school’s mission is a Christ-centred education where Gospel values are not only taught but also actively demonstrated in classrooms, playgrounds, and staff interactions. This commitment is beautifully reflected in the development of the school’s new Vision and Mission Statement: 'To Learn, Grow, and Wonder,' which captures the essence of their educational and spiritual journey.
A strong emphasis on literacy and writing was evident throughout the visit. Students engaged in exciting opportunities to develop their creative and expressive skills, including a collaborative project with Anna Kerrigan, Education Officer from ASPIRE (Drama and Creative Arts), on a production based on their book Fire in the Tops, co-authored with Sami Bayly. This work is set to be released and shared with the community in Term 4. The school also welcomed author Therese Lloyd, who captivated students with stories from her books Arki and the Land of Light and Arki and the Cursed Caves, further enriching their love of literature. Teachers are using targeted rubrics and strategies to support students in becoming skilled and confident writers.
Strong partnerships with families and the parish were clearly evident, reflecting a genuine commitment to collaboration, mutual respect, and shared responsibility in the education of each child. It was a joy to witness a school that so clearly lives its Catholic identity and strives for excellence in all aspects of learning and community life. We take this opportunity to thank Amy Maslen, Adam McCann, and all the staff for welcoming us into their beautiful school.

St Joseph’s Primary School Wingham
Sincere thanks to Mel Hunt, Adam Buchtman, Shae Lapi-ann and the dedicated staff of St Joseph’s Primary School, Wingham, for their warm hospitality during the Annual School Visit on Wednesday. Nestled along the banks of the Manning River, St Joseph’s continues to thrive as a vibrant and close-knit community. Despite the challenges brought on by recent floods, the school has shown remarkable resilience, maintaining its commitment to authentic, inclusive, and nurturing education for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Staff and student well-being remain at the forefront of all its practices, ensuring a safe, supportive, and flourishing environment for learning and growth.
The review team was particularly impressed by the school’s strategic focus on learning. In Writing, students engage with clearly embedded Success Criteria and Learning Intentions, co-constructed with them to promote ownership and clarity. Peer feedback and student-led conferences with goal setting are embedded practices that empower learners. In Mathematics, the use of embedded strategies, data walls, and the Numeracy Progressions supports targeted growth. A case management approach, combined with a robust tracking and data analysis cycle, ensures programs are responsive and effective. Regular data celebration meetings further foster a culture of achievement and shared success.
St Joseph’s lives its motto, “Growth in Unity,” through strong relationships, inclusive practices, and a shared commitment to excellence. From classroom interactions to community engagement, the spirit of unity was evident throughout the visit. The school remains a place where students are known, valued, and inspired to reach their full potential.

With my best wishes,
Jacqui

Early Learning – Outdoor Classroom Day
“Since the 1980s there has been a 50% decrease in outdoor activities and a 35% decrease in play overall”
-Barreiro & Howards, 2017
Outdoor learning is crucial for a child’s development, immersing them in a sensory experience and providing a sense of freedom, joy, and a range of physical and mental health benefits. November 6th is ‘Outdoor Classroom Day’, an international celebration of the importance of outdoor play and learning. The benefits of green and blue spaces on mental health for all ages are well-documented. Green spaces in schools have even been shown to improve academic performance!
Consider celebrating Outdoor Classroom Day in your school and planning some outdoor activities – even ones you might normally do inside.
If you participate, consider sending your photos to your Education Officers – Early Learning to share. More information on the day and ways other schools are celebrating can be found HERE.

On the 14th and 15th of August Catholic Schools hosted a number of Primary and Secondary Early Career teachers.
The teachers participated in a Session on EAL/D education.
One activity involved a first-hand experience of what it is like for the English language learners in our classroom - the teachers being immersed in a Mandarin lesson led by a Secondary Pedagogical Mentor (and Mandarin teacher) Louise Robertson.
The aim of the immersion was to help these early career teachers experience what it is like to be an English Language learner.
Not only are non-English speakers learning English, they are also learning in and through English. Research indicates that becoming proficient and literate in a second language generally takes between 5 – 7 years to master.
Definitely something worth pondering…
It can be mentally exhausting, and particularly challenging when you want to fit in with your peers; while simultaneously working incredibly hard to follow cues and unfamiliar routines.
The session allowed students to feel the same hesitation, confusion and cognitive load familiar to these students. It was also a great opportunity to be reminded of the importance of scaffolding language through the use of gesture, images, diagrams or translating tools.
Thankyou sincerely to Louise Robertson for your Mandarin immersion; and for the COMMS team for capturing the reluctance and confusion so well!

Read LessStudent BYOD Devices important message
This important update regarding student BYOD devices should be included in your next school newsletter. It is also highly recommended the below update be sent as a Compass notification to all families in student cohorts utilising BYOD before Term 3 ends. Please ensure it is also shared with incoming cohorts starting BYOD in 2026, so they receive clear and relevant guidance ahead of their onboarding. Please note that there is a separate body of work underway to ensure any staff and shared devices are upgraded to Windows 11. Read more in this week’s Connect.
Student BYOD Devices important message: Windows 10 is reaching end of life
Action is required for students with BYOD Windows 10 devices as Windows 10 will soon no longer be supported by Microsoft.
To ensure your student device security you should upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible.
Microsoft has announced that support for Windows 10 will end on 14 October 2025, meaning it will no longer receive critical security updates.
To stay protected and ensure optimal performance, it is strongly recommended that all students with BYOD Windows 10 devices follow Microsoft’s instructions and upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible. There is no charge for this upgrade.
- We ask that all families with Student Windows 10 computers complete this process before 15 October 2025 so that students do not experience disruptions to their learning.
- Most newer devices will support Windows 11.
- If the device is too old, you may need to consider an alternative supported device (where possible).
- If you need assistance or have questions about upgrading, please reach out to the IT support team in our school.
Why this matters:
- Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 from 15 October 2025.
- Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures your child’s device remains secure and supported.
- Student Work Protection: Staying current helps safeguard assignments, projects, and personal data.
Ways to install Windows 11 - Microsoft Support
Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ - Microsoft Support
Read our FAQs for more support:
How do I check what version of Windows am I running?
- Select Start > Settings > System, then select About. You then see Edition, Version, and OS Build information.
What if my device can’t upgrade?
If a Student’s BYOD laptop is running Windows 10 and can’t be upgraded to Windows 11 (usually due to older hardware), Microsoft is offering a free security update program to help keep the device safe for one more year.
The Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is designed to keep your current Windows 10 PC protected after support ends, helping you stay secure during the transition.
How to Join Microsoft’s ESU Program
Microsoft has made it easy to enrol directly from the laptop:
- On eligible computers, a setup wizard will appear in Settings > Windows Update.
- There are three ways to enrol:
- Free – Sync your settings to the cloud using Windows Backup. You must be logged in as administrator and with a Microsoft account.
- Free – Use 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
- Paid – Buy a one-year license for $30 USD (families cover this cost).
Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10 | Microsoft Learn
Read LessWe’re excited to announce that Windows 11 will be rolled out across all school-issued Windows computers over the coming months and into 2026.
Schools will be contacted directly ahead of their scheduled rollout to ensure a smooth transition and provide support throughout the upgrade process.
In the meantime, any CDMN-owned computers still running Windows 10 will automatically receive a security update to stay protected for one year, as part of Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. No action is required by users for this update to be applied.
Please see the information below and see our Windows 11 upgrade page on Connect@MN for details. Windows 11 upgrade & MDM Migration Project.
Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 will receive no further updates after 15 October 2025. While Technology Services will continue to support Windows 10 into 2026, most computers will need to transition to Windows 11 to maintain security and support.
Current computers use Windows 10 and the Windows 11 change is a significant system upgrade that will give a new look and feel to your computer and offers a range of powerful new features and capabilities, including enhanced security and improved performance, all with familiar tools.
The project will upgrade all staff-assigned computers and shared/school-owned devices (including library, lab, and classroom shared computers).
- New computers for staff will come with Windows 11 pre-installed along with guidelines and help documents to be provided.
- Incompatible computers will be assessed for replacement or retirement – in consultation with schools and aligned with existing device replacement plans where possible.
We look forward to working with our schools to modernise and enhance the daily technology use of our staff and students.
The move to Windows 11 will allow Technology Services to better support our staff and students through improved device management and remote support, while ensuring our Windows devices remain up to date and secure.
Technology Services is currently planning the rollout timeline and the support required to assist schools through this transition. More details will be shared soon.
